Top 10 tips to ace an interview

7/19/2023

Here are my best tips for performing at your peak during an interview:

  1. Enthusiasm. Channel the reasons why the role intrigued you initially and bring that enthusiasm into the interview. A high energy candidate is always noticed.
  2. Do your preparation. Seek out a briefing on the people you are meeting. You can get this from the firm directly, or your recruiter. Get insights on the style and focus of the interviewers, and understand what will impress.
  3. Always... arrive early. Arrive into the virtual interview or in person interview early; always.
  4. Prepare examples that hit the mark. Know what examples will speak directly to the role you're interviewing for. These will not always be the same examples you've relied upon in the past.
  5. Effective communication. Communicate in a way that you can see is resonating. Watch how your interviewer is receiving the information you're providing. This is a skill, and adds another layer that will make the interview feel more intense because you're concentrating on all of these elements, but these techniques truly separate you from your peers.
  6. Strike a balance between confidence and humility. Bring your confidence A-game, but also show that you are humble and capable of self-reflection and self-assessment.
  7. Ask smart, thoughtful questions. Create different questions for each person you will meet. This shows your true understanding of the role and the firm and your dedication to resonate with each person individually.
  8. Tell them you want the job! This is not cliché, trust me. People actually want to hear you want the job they are offering. (This goes directly to showing your enthusiasm.)
  9. Read the virtual or physical room. Watching out for visual cues will tell you whether your examples are resonating. For example, you may need to elaborate more or be more concise, talk more or less, let your guard down, and so on.
  10. Follow up. Make it your best practice to do a thoughtful follow up to each of the interviewers, the internal people in the firm who helped you to get to that interview, and / or the recruiter you're working with. Debriefing with all involved parties shows a professionalism and dedication that gets noticed.
